This short story is about two women who attend a conference in Toronto for composers of classical music. Celia Fortier, who has written music for many decades, wants a boost into the final phase of her working life. Nan, her temporary secretary for the week, is the great-niece of Celia's mentor. Nan's father and Celia once had an affair. After a rocky introduction to life in the city, Nan wants to find a path that will work for her. The story begins at a point of tension between the two women and builds on this unpromising start to a friendship.
